Verzenay, land of Mumm

22/04/2025
To the north of the Montagne de Reims, in the heart of Champagne, the very famous village of Verzenay is inseparable from the history of Maison Mumm.

When it was founded in 1827, the House already obtained its supplies from winegrowers established in this region. From the 1840s onwards, it acquired several plots to create its own vineyard. Convinced of the importance of the origin and quality of the wines of this vintage, the family made it one of the central points of its activity. With this in mind, a press was built in 1843 in the heart of this region. It is still in operation today.
The scale of vintages established in 1911 for the entire region will confirm the accuracy of the successive acquisitions during the 19th century, by placing Verzenay among the 17 villages classified as Grand Cru.
Overlooked by its iconic two-hundred-year-old windmill, “the Verzenay de Mumm vineyard now covers 20 hectares, almost entirely planted with Pinot Noir vines with an average age of 35 years” explains Rudy Lejeune, who is the Head of Cultivation.

Facing North East, its deep limestone terroir allows for slow vine growth, favouring structured wines with beautiful aromatic complexity. Magalie Maréchal, assistant to the Cellar Master, believes that “the Pinot Noirs of Verzenay are particularly appreciated for their power combined with a minerality tending towards flint, gunflint”. This typicality marks the expression of an abrupt terroir and offers frank wines with a smoky side that enrich the blends of the RSRV Rosé Foujita and RSRV Cuvée 4.5 cuvées and exclusively compose RSRV Blanc de Noirs.
